The Wave Machine is a kit that will simulate the wave action in a vibrating string, or in a closed end organ pipe. This kit can be used as either an educational demonstration, or as a desk toy.
It consists of 32 pieces of acrylic loosely held together by an elastic strip. This allows each of the pieces to move individually, but loosely linked to the one before. This allows wave like operation, this is driven by a geared motor which is speed controlled so as to allow the frequency of the wave to be set. As the wave progresses down the strip, it eventually reaches the end where it is reflected back. This means that the whole device will resonate when there is 1.5,2.5,3.5 or 4.5 waves along this length, revealing the nodes and anti-nodes at that frequency. At other speed settings a random pattern will occur.
The Kit is driven from a small geared motor and a linkage. The speed of the motor can be controlled by the speed controller and the whole device is powered from 3 AA cells (not included).
