Making the Maxwell’s Cradle – Electronics

Take the PCB make sure it is clean and free from dirt. Remove any tags from around the edge

Insert the IC socket in the PCB, ensure that the cut out on the socket, matches the cut out on the PCB silkscreen. Slightly bend the legs to hold it in place as you solder it in.

Insert the two 330 Ohm Resistors (Orange Orange Brown) into the positions shown, again slightly bend the legs of the resistors to hold them in place whilst soldering. Cut the remainder of the legs of the resistors off close to the PCB after soldering.

Insert the two 10K Ohm Resistors (Brown Black Orange ) into the positions shown, again slightly bend the legs of the resistors to hold them in place whilst soldering. Cut the remainder of the legs of the resistors off close to the PCB after soldering.

Insert the 220 Ohm Resistor (Red Red Brown) and the 470 Ohm resistor (Yellow, Purple, Brown) into the positions shown, again slightly bend the legs of the resistors to hold them in place whilst soldering. Cut the remainder of the legs of the resistors off close to the PCB after soldering.

Insert and solder the diode into the PCB, ensure that the cathode (silver stripe) goes to the square pad on the PCB. Cut the remainder of the legs of the diode off close to the PCB after soldering.

Take the two LED’s The shorter of the two legs is the cathode. If you really look hard you will also see that there is a flat on the enclosure next to this leg as well.

Insert and solder the two LED’s into the PCB where shown, ensure the cathode (short leg) goes into the square pad on the PCB. Cut the remainder of the legs off close to the PCB after soldering.

Insert the two 100nF capacitors and the regulator into the PCB.

Cut the remainder of the legs close to the PCB after soldering.

Insert the two 100uF capacitors into the PCB, ensure that the -ve band on the capacitor is over the white filled half of the symbol on the PCB silkscreen. Solder in the transistor as shown and bend over to meet the PCB

Place the Opto Sensor into the PCB (don’t solder it yet…) Ensure the corner cut out on the sensor, matches the cut out on the symbol of the PCB

Solder the Sensor 8mm away from the PCB, Ensure that when you have soldered the sensor that it stands perpendicular to the PCB

and exactly the same for the other sensor.

Cut off any excess wires from the bottom of the PCB

Solder in the power connector (if you are using one, into the position shown.

Check over your PCB for any unsoldered joints and solder bridges between pins.

Apply power 12v to the supply connector, ensuring that the polarity is correct (see +/- on the bottom of the PCB) and check that between pin1 and pin 8 that you have 5V. If not or if any component gets hot, investigate the cause.

Trim the coil wires to 50mm and using a sharp knife scrape off the last 5mm of the enamel on both leads, Solder on the coil wires to the PCB, the polarity is not important.

Insert the IC making sure that the divot in the IC matches the divot in the socket.
