Desktop standing solenoid engine kits, with an acrylic frame, flywheel(s) and solenoid piston(s)
Currently there are three engines in the range, but more are on the drawing board.
Solenoid Engine Single
The Solenoid Engine V2 is a complete resedign of the origional Extrem Kits desktop standing solenoid engine kit. It is now available with an acrylic frame or MDF frame, flywheel and a single solenoid piston. The Solenoid Engine Kit is completely electronically controlled. Piston timing comes from an slotted-opto sensor on a separate timing cam and speed regulation comes from the small embedded CPU to give a wide range of running speeds, which are adjustable with a pair of push buttons on the back of the engine to increase/decrease the speed.
It is capable of running from 5-18V supply with an average current draw as low as 20mA, depending on the solenoid choice, speed and power voltage. Piston timing and con-rod length are all adjustable and there is provision for adding 8 x M5 nuts and bolts around the flywheel for added weight. An LED indicates the solenoid output.
Solenoid Engine Single Raspberry Pi / micro:bit
The Solenoid Engine Single V2 is also available for control from a Raspberry PI or BBC Micro:bit

Solenoid Engine Twin
The Solenoid Engine twin is a horizontal twin “cylinder” solenoid engine kit with an acrylic frame, flywheel and a two solenoid pistons. The Solenoid Engine Twin Kit is completely electronically controlled. Piston timing comes from a pair of opto interrupters on the flywheels axle and speed regulation comes from the small embedded CPU to give a wide range of running speeds. These are adjustable with a pair of push buttons on the top of the engine to increase/decrease the speed and to reverse the direction of the engine.
It is capable of running from 5-18V supply with an average current draw as low as 40mA, and there is provision for adding 16 x M5 nuts and bolts around the flywheels for added weight for smoother slower running.
Solenoid Beam Engine
The Solenoid Engine twin is a vertical single “cylinder” beam engine kit with an acrylic frame, flywheel and a solenoid piston. The Solenoid Beam Engine Kit is completely electronically controlled. Piston timing comes from an opto interrupter on the flywheels axle and speed regulation comes from the small embedded CPU to give a wide range of running speeds. These are adjustable with a pair of push buttons behind the engine to increase/decrease the speed of the engine
It is capable of running from 5-18V supply with an average current draw as low as 20mA, and comes complete with 12 x M5 nuts and bolts around the flywheels giving added weight for smoother slower running, just like the real thing.
