After selling literally hundreds of our V1 VDG, we have listened to the comments we have received, and improved on this very popular design.
The changes from V1 are :-
- No requirements for an external power supply, a switched battery supply is included.
- A better earth connection via a 4mm “banana” socket
- Easier installation of the foil on the roller combs
- Easier to assemble
The Van De Graaff (VDG) Generator kit is a small Van De Graaff (VDG) Generator that will achieve 30,000 to 40,000 volts of “static” electricity. The kit is a complete Van de Graaff system, comprising of a Polished Stainless Steel Dome, high speed motor, dissimilar charging rollers , charge take off combs and a 65mm stainless steel storage ball. The VDG runs from a 6V battery pack, (batteries not included) and is completely safe to use, as although the output voltages are high, the current this little device can provide is very small. The charge can be smaller than you can pick up walking across a carpet on a dry day. But, this is enough to get sparks to fly 15-20mm and you can use this generator for a number experiments :- Franklin’s bells, Jumping Rice, Electric Wind, ping-pong ball cyclotron. This high voltage kit is designed for kids (or adults) to learn about “static” electricity by actually building a working device. This can lean on to discussions about charge separation, contact charging and the tribo-electric scale.
The VDG is easy to construct and to take apart. Various changes to the device can be made to study the effect that changes to the combs and charging rollers make. The kit has been made so that it can be maintained easily.
