Instructions to build a small buzz wire using the Extreme Kits Buzz wire kit. These are for a simple build using readily available household items (apart from the kit)
Tools needed
Small Screwdriver
Medium Screwdriver
Sharp knife
Pliers
Materials needed
Buzz Wire Kit (from Extreme Kits)
400mm thin flexible hookup wire
4 x No6 3/4″ wood screws (2.5mm x 20mm)
Electrical Tape
300mm length of 2.5mm Twin and Earth or some stiff thick uninsulated wire.
Wooden Base
It should end up looking something like this… Put on one side.
Slit the outer sleeving on the twin and earth and pull out the three conductors, discard the thin uninsulated earth wire.
Trim the ends of the red insulation to leave 50mm exposed
Strip all of the insulation from the black wire
Bend the uninsulated wire with the red sleeving around a large screwdriver or ball point pen to form a loop.
Twist the loop together at the end and cut off any spare wire.
Using the electrical tape cover the twist at the bottom of the loop, cut the wire down to 100mm long and strip back 5mm of insulation from the other end.
Cut a piece of hookup wire 300mm long, Strip 20mm of insulation off one end of the hookup wire and wrap around the uninsulated section of the looped wire.
Take the other piece of thick wire and form a 3mm loop in both ends bu forming it around a small screwdriver.
Bend the wire into an interesting shape, ensuring that the two loops are at 90 degrees to the rest of the now bendy wire.
Cut a piece of hookup wire 100mm long, Strip 20mm of insulation off one end of the hookup wire and wrap around the uninsulated section of the wire above wire.
Solder the two joints of hookup wire to the thick wires.
Taking the Red looped wire,Bend the wire back on it self
and insulate with tape
Insulate the bottom 10mm of the bendy wire with tape.
Solder the two hookup wires to the wire pads on the Buzz Wire kit.
Screw down the bendy wire and the kit to a wooden base
Prepare for hours of noisy and frustrating fun 🙂
Development ideas
If you get bored with the wire, un-screw it and make another in a different shape.
If you want to make it bigger. Replace the wire with copper break pipe(5mm diameter), micro-bore central hating pipe (8mm diameter) or for a really large one 1/2″ (12.5mm) copper pipe, although you will need to use joints or special tools to put in the bends. Experiment with different loops and handles. If you make a really big one, how about mounting the Buzz wire kit in the handle.
